10 CC : How dare You 1976

$

Deriving their name from the metric total of semen ejaculated by the average male, the tongue-in-cheek British art-pop band 10cc comprised an all-star roster of Manchester-based musicians : vocalist/guitarist Graham Gouldman was a former member of the Mockingbirds and the author of hits for the Yardbirds, the Hollies,Herman's Hermits and Jeff Beck, Singer/guitarist Eric Stewart was an alum of Wayne Fontana & the Mindbenders, and vocalists/multi-instrumentalists Kevin Godley and Lol Creme were both highly regarded studio players .

Formed in 1970 , 10cc began as a session unit dubbed Hotlegs , after establishing residence at Stewart's Strawberry Studios , Hotlegs scored a surprise U.K . smash with the single "Neanderthal Man," subsequently issuing an LP , Thinks,School Times and touring with the Moody Blues.

After scoring their commercial breakthrough with "I'm Not in Love" from 1975's The Original Soundtrack, 10cc continued to build on their good fortune with How Dare You. It didn't spawn another massive hit like "I'm Not in Love," but it is a well-crafted album that shows off 10cc's eccentric humor and pop smarts in equal measure.

This time, the hit singles were "I'm Mandy Fly Me" and "Art for Art's Sake." The first tune is the fanciful tale of a plane crash victim saved from death by the stewardess of his dreams that plays out a poppy mock-exotica musical backdrop while the second is a tongue-in-cheek parody of commercial-minded artists set to a rocking, cowbell-driven beat.

Elsewhere, How Dare You pursues a similar mix of zany humor and pop hooks: "Iceberg" brings its tale of a frigid romantic partner to life with an incredibly intricate and jazzy vocal melody, and "I Wanna Rule the World" is a witty tale of a dictator-in-training with enough catchy riffs and vocal harmonies for two or three songs. How Dare You loses a bit of steam on its second side when the songs' tempos start to slow down, but "Rock 'N' Roll Lullaby" and "Don't Hang Up" keep the listener involved through a combination of melodic songwriting and typically well-crafted arrangements.

In the end, How Dare You never hits the giddy heights of The Original Soundtrack but it remains a solid album of witty pop songs that will satisfy anyone with a yen for 10cc.

Slaine is a comic hero from the pages of 2000 AD – one of Britain's most popular comic books.

Slaine is a barbarian fantasy adventure series based on Celtic myths and stories which first appeared in 1983, written by Pat Mills and initially drawn by his then wife, Angela Kincaid.
Pat Mills has written comics since the early seventies.

As well as his influential role in creating and contributing to numerous of British comics, Mills has produced work in both America and Europe. In particular he is known for creating 2000 AD where he was the first editor and contributed to a number of long-running stories like ABC Warriors which has run for nearly thirty years. He was also responsible for creating The Butterfly Children series of books for children with his former wife, Angela Kincaid.

Most of the early stories were drawn by Massimo Belardinelli and Mike McMahon.
Other notable artists to have worked on the character include Glenn Fabry and Simon Bisley. The current artist is Clint Langley, whose artwork combines painting, photography and digital art.

Slaine's favourite weapon is an axe called "Brainbiter". He has the power of the "warp spasm", based on the riastrad or body-distorting battle frenzy of the Irish hero Cu Chulainn, in which earth power "warps" through his body,

Slaine and Ukko

turning him into a terrifying, monstrously powerful figure. He is a devotee of the earth goddess Danu.At the start of the series Slaine was a wanderer, banished from his tribe, the Sessair. He explored the Land of the Young (Irish Tir na nOg) in the company of an unscrupulous dwarf called Ukko (Finnish for "old man", and the name of the Finnish pagan Thunder god), fighting monsters and mercenaries in the fantasy tradition.

In one early adventure he rescued a maiden, Medb (named after the Irish mythological queen Medb) from being sacrificed in a Wicker Man, only to earn her enmity – she was a devotee of Crom Cruach, the god to whom she was to be sacrificed, and was looking forward to the experience.

Her master and mentor, the ancient, rotting and insane Lord Weird Slough Feg, became the series' main villain.

Following stories featured sky chariots (flying longships), dragons and prehistoric alien gods.

As the series progressed, Slaine returned to his tribe and became king

leading them against the Fomorians, a race of Sea Demons who were oppressing them.
Then, in the landmark storyline The Horned God, Slaine united the tribes of the earth goddess against Lord Weird Slough Feg
and his allies, while his personal devotion to the goddess led to him becoming a new incarnation of the Horned God Carnun (based on the Gaulish deity Cernunnos).

Slough Feg : The Horned God

By the end of the story the Land of the Young is no more, and Slaine is the first High King of Ireland.

These new enemies turned out to be a full Fomorian invasion led by Balor and the sadistic Moloch, murdering, raping and eating their way through Slaine's tribe until, wracked with warp-spasm, Slaine was able to take out Balor. The tribal council forced Slaine to let Moloch go, hoping he'd fulfill his promise of keeping the Fomorians out of Ireland

The tribal council forced Slaine to let Moloch go, hoping he'd fulfill his promise of keeping the Fomorians out of Ireland; instead, he deliberately returned to rape and murder Niamh.

Wanting vengeance, Slaine abdicated the throne to go to Albion and kill Moloch, which he succeeded in doing. In his absence, his son Kai left the tribe to search for his father .

Slaine also killed Dagon  , The sea monster coming from the deep .

Slaine was able to convince the tribal council that the demons could be killed and war was once more declared on the invaders, but it was clear that Ireland would be constantly attacked by wave after wave of Fomorian invasion.

Slaine hit on the idea of having the Tribe of Danu escape to the Otherworld that their Sky Chariots had been sent to, thus freeing them from the demons and allowing the Atlanteans to settle peacefully in Ireland; both armies united against Odacon and his Sea Demons.

Slaine was able to free the Atlantean leader Gael from being Odacon's Golamh by handing over Sethor to take Gael's place; and they led their armies to bolster the city of Tara.

While the tribes fought a defensive battle, Slaine was sent to the Otherworld to secure the blessings of Danu for the Tribes of the Earth Goddess to settle there; this done, he returned with her power behind him and led a charge that decimated Odacon's forces. The Tribe was cast to the Otherworld in the aftermath, and Slaine assisted Gael in finally destroying Odacon and the parasitic spawn with which he had infested the outer-lying villages.

With Gael as High King of Ireland and founder of the eventual Gaelic race, Slaine left to track down his son. He found Kai at a travelling funfair, and later embarked on a quest to track down Crom Dubh.

Main characters

SLAINE MAC ROTH : Mighty black-haired Irish warrior exiled from the Sessair tribe for having an affair with the chief's fiance Niamh. He loves fighting and often beats up Ukko. His weapon is the stone axe Brainbiter and he first experienced the Warp Spasm as a child.

UKKO : Slaine's dwarf sidekick and chronicler, named after the Finnish storm-god Ukko. He is lecherous and greedy; like most fantasy dwarves he loves gold and has a business mind centuries ahead of the human characters. When Slaine becomes king Ukko is appointed his jester.

NEST : Druidess who urges Ukko to record Slaine's deeds. Ukko argues with her all the time but it is hinted there may be some mutual attraction between them.

NIAMH : Slaine's strong-willed wife. She is very assertive even for a woman of her times and prone to anger and jealousy, often beating up Slaine's other wives and concubines[9]

Supporting characters

MACHA : The mother of Slaine

DANU :  Goddess of the earth who provides Slaine with guidance. Originally earth was ruled by female goddesses but the druids suppressed them and replaced them with male counterparts

CATHBAD :  Chief druid who wears a horse skull and has a strong dislike of Ukko. He is a short old man with a moustache and bald head, save for a single tuft of hair.

MYRDDIN :  Half-Cythron Atlantean survivor and high-level magus analogous to Merlin. His fortress is located in modern-day Wales.

MURDACH :  Time-displaced son of Brian Boru.

KAI : Slaine's son. Slaine wanted him to be a warrior but Niamh had him train as a druid. Later Kai became a travelling acrobat .

KING RUDRAIGE MAC DELA :  Ruler of the city of Gorlias and guardian of the Silver Sword of the Moon. His hand was bitten off by Avagddu and replaced with a metal prosthesis, preventing him from becoming High King. He was married to Niamh for a year but left her for a warrior resembling Arnold Schwarzenegger's Conan .

KING GANN MAc DELA :  Ruler of Finias and wielder of the Spear of the Flaming Sun. To celebrate the defeat of the Fomorians Gann was sacrificed and eaten by the tribe .

LORD WEIRD SLOUGH FEG : The insane horned God .

KING SENGANN MAC DELA : Mad ruler of Falias, a moon-worshipping society. His people, the black-skinned Tribe of the Shadows, were responsible for exterminating the Neanderthal-like Beaver folk and stealing the Stone of Destiny.

MOGROOTH : Fearsome Atlantean dragon rider and gladiator with enlarged, sharpened fangs. Despises Ukko for his thievery.

AVANC :  The Avanc was a monstrous creature that, like most lake monsters, was said to prey upon any foolish enough to fall into or swim in its lake.

TLACHTA : Mogrooth's daughter and one of Myrddin's best warriors. Was badly disfigured by Cythron laser beam.

BALOR : Leader of the Fomorians. He only has one eye which is capable of destroying anything he stares at.

AVAGDU : Son of the godess of Earth is the most ugly , stupid and dark creature who wants to kill Slaine. He dies eating himself .

ROBYM :  An evil dwarf who acts as a servant to Medb .

MEDB MEGRIM : Drune priestess saved by Slaine from human sacrifice. It is revealed she wanted to be sacrificed to the worm-god Crom to become a goddess.

MOLOCH :  Balor's cruel lieutenant, who wields six swords in battle. Based on the pagan god Molech. Assumed command of the Fomorians when Balor was killed, and brutally murdered Niamh.

Evi Hasapidou Watson and guitarist Panos K. formed the band at the beginning of the 90s after the sparks flew between them during an audition. "I heard Evi sing" , "I was pretty much blown" away says Panos. Pretty much blown away by Panos guitar and poetry herself, Evi left the band she was in and started singing and composing with Panos.

The duo were soon joined by friends musicians and started playing live and recording their first album for Studio2 an independent Athenian label.
The album was adored by Greek and International psychedelia fans.

The band won first price in the 1996 Scype (song competition of Youth Programs in Europe) competition, hosted in Copenhagen, where bands from all European Union countries participated including the UK and Ireland. Voted by live audiences all around Europe as their favourite band and 'Over' as their favourite song, Echo Tattoo eventually landed a contract with another Athenian label, FM Records.

Their second album "Room of Toys" was recorded in Bath and London UK, produced by Bryan New and released in 1997 in Greece, Belgium, Spain and Holland with AFM FM Records European sub-label and Viva Records (subsidiary of Snuff Garrett Records).

Tiger Lillies : Special Edition EP - Jazz &Τζαζ 2004

The Tiger Lillies were formed in 1989 and as the decades go by their sound remains one of the most unique and original things one could come across. Martyn Jacques, the band's front man, songwriter and founder, spent most of his twenties in a flat above a brothel in London's Soho, peeping through his window at the buzz of Soho’s lowlife. It took him a good ten years to turn that strange world into art, while training as a singer and songwriter. In 1989 he got his first accordion and The Tiger Lillies were formed shortly after.

With their signature blend of chanson, opera, and Gypsy music, London-based experimental rock trio the Tiger Lillies are difficult to define in one sentence.

Back in the early 90's the avant garde trio stood out immediately for its distinct sound and style and the band quickly worked its way up from London pubs to the Piccadilly Theatre and buskers’ benches to the Sydney Opera House. Soon the The Tiger Lillies were touring the world giving concerts and participating in various art and theatre projects.

The group revels in the bawdy vaudeville traditions of prostitution, opium dens, and the seedy life of the eternal street musician.

A couple of the many highlights in their career were the 2 Olivier Awards they won for the cult hit musical Shockheaded Peter and the Grammy nomination for their album The Gorey End. Within the last two decades
The Tiger Lillies have been doing an average of over 200 gigs a year and despite spending so much time on the road they have managed to also release more than one album a year (total number is somewhere around 35, but who is counting?).

They have participated in numerous shows all over the world, collaborating with artists of all disciplines: from circus performers to Shakespearean actors, experimental dancers to avant garde photographers and burlesque puppeteers to classical music ensembles.

The world of The Tiger Lillies is dark, peculiar and varied, with moments of deep sadness, cruel black humour and immense beauty. This unique "anarchic Brechtian street opera trio" tours the world playing songs about “anything that doesn’t involve beautiful blonde girls and boys running at the meadow” to quote their founder Martyn Jacques. Hence, their songs cover all the dark aspects of life, from prostitution and drug addiction to violence and despair.

Always with a touch of twisted humor and sharp irony The Tiger Lillies “point an implicit accusing finger back at us: what on Earth are we doing, laughing at this stuff?”. Their music is a mixture of pre-war Berlin cabaret, anarchic opera and gypsy music, echoing the voices of Bertolt Brecht and Jacques Brel. The Tiger Lillies shock, amuse and entertain in a postmodern vaudeville way, with their inimitable in-yer-face shows, where no limit should be taken for granted.

Maria  Lyrics

He picks you up, in his car,
He opens every orifice and scar.
Maria, Maria

He cuts you down, in your prime
You will not wither or decline.
Maria, Maria

He tortures you, he holds you down
He beats you black, blue, green and brown.
Maria, Maria

He murders you, he takes your life
For Satan, Satan, Satan's light.
Maria, Maria
Maria, Maria

He feasts on you from dusk to dawn
His knife your body will transform.
Maria, Maria

Your hair so long, your hair so brown
Now in his evil, in his evil you do drown.
Maria, Maria

He drinks your blood as holy wine,
Now in his evil you decline.

Μπορώ να μπω στα όνειρά σου ;

στην άτιμη και άδικη αλαζονεία μας ;

Γυρνά .
Στροβιλίζεται ο χώρος .

Barclay James Harvest : Baby James Harvest 1972

The group was formed in September of 1966 in Oldham, Lancashire. Lees and Wolstenholme were classmates who played together in a band called the Blues Keepers; that group soon merged with a band called the Wickeds, which included Holroyd and Pritchard.
They became Barclay James Harvest in June of 1967 and began rehearsing at an 18th century farmhouse in Lancashire.

The psychedelic era was in full swing, and the era of progressive rock about to begin -- the Moody Blues, in particular, were beginning to cut an international swathe across the music world. BJH cut a series of demos
In April they issued their first single, a folky, faux-classical song called "Early Morning." The group got caught up a year later in a corporate change at EMI, and it was decided to move the more progressive-sounding groups on the label onto a new label, coincidentally named Harvest. Their first release on the new label was the single "Brother Thrush."

The band recorded two more albums for Harvest,"Short Stories" (1971) and 'Baby James Harvest" (1972), and spent much of 1972 on the road, including an unsuccessful tour of the U.S. They also released a pair of singles, "When the City Sleeps" and "Breathless," under the pseudonym "Bombadil" (a name taken from a J.R.R. Tolkien short story), all to no avail. 1973 saw them part company with EMI after one last single, "Rock and Roll Woman."

It seemed at first as though BJH was locked once again into a cycle of failure. Finally, in late 1974, their double-album "Barclay James Harvest Live" broke through to the public -- the group was rewarded with a Top 40 placement in England and more sales activity on the European continent than they'd previously seen.

A year later, "Octoberon" reached the Top 20.
In 1977, they released "Gone to Earth", their most accomplished album to date, and by the end of the year the group found themselves playing to arena-sized audiences.
Their 1979 album "Eyes of the Universe" was a modest hit in England, but its release marked a flashpoint in Barclay James Harvest's career in continental Europe, especially Germany; on August 30, 1980, the band performed a free concert in front of nearly 200,000 people at the Reichstag in Berlin, which was filmed and recorded. A subsequent live album, Concert for the People, became the group's biggest-selling album in England, rising to number 15 in 1982.
"Turn of the Tide" (1981) and "Ring of Changes" (1983) were less successful, although the latter did spawn their last charting single, "Just a Day Away." Their subsequent Polydor albums, Victims of Circumstance, Face to Face, and Welcome to the Show, charted ever lower in England, even as the group's popularity grew in Europe. In 1988, they released a new live album, "Glasnost", cut at a concert in East Berlin. The group marked the 25th anniversary with a concert in Liverpool, and toured to support a British Polydor compilation, "The Best of Barclay James Harvest".

SUMMER SOLDIER LYRICS

I feel sorry for the soldier who is shot and stoned in anger
I feel sorry for his wife and child at home
I feel sorry for the bomber who all life and limb dishonours
For the people that he's maimed and left alone
The Lord God said love thy neighbour
Though in human life he trades, he's still a man
I feel sorry for the children who with open mind are willing
To fight for ideals aged and past their time
I feel sorry for the children who will join the vicious circle
Of instinct fear bred from their parents' minds
The Lord God said love thy neighbour
Break the circle, free the hater, call him a friend

Wake up, wake up, there's a man by your side
With a knife and a gun in each hand
Wake up, wake up, you're one and the same
It's time to stop and decide

SONAR BLIPS

Sonar Blips was a short lived band from Athens that was formed in the late 80’s.
Most of the members of the band, like the guitar player Nikos Levantis and the bass player George “Rakos” Kagialedakis were former members of several Greek punk rock and new wave bands during the 80’s that had no releases.

Sonar Blips’s sound was refreshing for the Greek underground scene and that is the main reason why they pretty soon were on heavy radio rotation.
Their music could be categorised as pop/new wave in the spirit of the English bands of the late 80’s/early 90’s, like the Happy Mondays, Soup Dragons, Inspiral Carpets, Stone Roses and others.
The band released a same titled vinyl album in 1991 by Wipe out Records and soon their track "Coincidence" became a radio hit.

DING AN SICH

First Chapter (1987 - 1991)

Ding An Sich was formed in 1987 in Athens - Greece. Their first formation included: Nick Sarikostas - bass , George Polizos - drums , Takis Merekos - voice , and a guitarist whose name is forgotten. He was replaced by Dimitris Papalakis just a while before the recordings for the first single were about to start.

In 1989 a 7 inch single named And / Wandering was released. In 1990 Vagelis Bekonopoulos joined the group as keyboardist. During that period, the guitarist Tasos Nomikos , replaced D. Papalakis. From 1988 until 1991, the band recorded the tracks which formed their first complete work named Old As Forever.New As Tomorrow. During this period, they performed some live shows too… the most remarkable of which are with Paul Roland and The Damned.

Second Chapter (1993 - 1996)

This period is distinguished for the substantial changes as far as the formation is concerned, but also their direction. Ding An Sich sustain as studio project only. The trinity consists of: Maria Batistatou - voices , George Ginis - Various / Effects , Nick Sarikostas - Programming / Keyboards , Some good friends of the band, offered a helping hand, and the album The Wanderer & His Shadow was released at the dawn of 1996.

Third Chapter ( 1996 - 2004)

Starting point of this period could be regarded any year after 1996.

FORWARD MUSIC QUINTET

Greek New Wave/Darkwave band.
Formed in 1981 by two members of Παρθενογένεσις (Parthenogenesis), George Makridis (bass) and Takis Polichronopoulos (vocals). Members were also Natassa Streuberg (keyboards), Elle (guitar and vocals) and Nick (drums).
In Septemeber 1982, they supported New Order at their concert in Athens. Within the same year they toured with T.V.C.in 10 Greek cities.

THIS FLUID

This fluid were formed in 1995 by Spyros Faros (composer, musician, performer), Makis Faros (visual artist, director, musician) and Anna Maratou (music therapist, musician). This line up of the group released ‘Flud’ a CD/2lp in 1997 and created stage performances of their music at Fournos Theater and elsewhere. The next releases were the ep ‘spiral’ (1999) and the cd ‘lips like poppy’ (2000), with a new line up that included Nicoleta Chatzopoulou (musician, composer) and Panagiotis Tsagkas (musician, director of photography). In parallel to producing and releasing music, they create music for modern dance productions.

In 2008-9 the group, whose dynamically shifting membership (the only constants members being Spyros and Makis Faros) now included Thanos Vavaroutas / Housework (musician, composer), releases the CD ‘heartbreak hotel’.
They also participate in the art exhibit ‘the portrait of museum’ at Averof art museum in Metsovo, with the sound instalation ‘For 3 days I was walking’ and create the sound environment for Nefeli Kontarini’s ‘2 eyes only’ art exhibit on all floors of the Benaki Museum of Islamic Art.

BLUE BIRDS REFUSE TO FLY

Members :
Eva K., George Dedes, George Priniotakis, Kyriakos Poursanides

Blue Birds Refuse To Fly was originally a song by Wasteland, a greek indie band in which both Kyriakos P. participated (as keyboard player and lead vocalist - guitar player respectively) from 1989 to 1998. The band split up in ‘98 and Kyriakos P. chose this song to be the name of his personal music journey.
Hailing from Greece, this band got their start a few years ago original as the solo project of Kyriako P, but was joined by vocalist Eva K. and George P. for a solid, futurepop band. Their sound shows the fresh direction of this band with Eva's siren-like vocals leading the way over a tapestry of solid, pounding elctronic music. Their albums are presented with cool artwork.

BOKOMOLECH

Alternative Rock band formed in 1991 in Athens, Greece.
Their name is a misspelling of the name of Ukrainian physiciologist Alexander A. Bogomoletz (1881-1946) who made research on the prolongation of life, producing also a serum of the same name.

On 13/7/1996 they performed live at 'Rock Of Gods' (Pireaus) along with 'Violent Femmes', 'Jesus And Mary Chain, The', 'Paradise Lost', 'Dead Moon'& 'Bad Religion'.
On 16/7/1998 they performed at 'Rockwave Festival' (Pireaus) along with 'Pulp', 'Sonic Youth', 'Closer (2)', 'Puressence'& 'Τα Ξύλινα Σπαθιά'.
They performed live at Indie Free Festival (Athens) in 1992, 1993 & 2010.

JACK OF ALL TRADES

"Jack Of All Trades" was a greek undergound psychedelic rock group.
They released a self-titled mini-album in 1990 and an album in 1995, titled "just Before unfair Loss".
They were in existence for almost a decade (mid-80's to mid-90's) and disbanded unexpectably, because of the death of Panagiotis Kiritsis (guitarist) in a car accident.
Members:
Άγης Γράβαρης, Βίκυ Βαρύτη, Ηλίας Πορτοκαλάκης, Μάριος Πεφτίτσης, Νίκος Βαρύτης, Παναγιώτης Κυρίτσης

Milo Manara - Hugo Pratt : Indian Summer

Creators

Writer : Milo Manara, Hugo Pratt
Artist : Milo Manara

Hugo Pratt is a gifted writer, a natural born story-teller. Milo Manara is an equally gifted and talented artist. Together they recreate true and accurate colonial history based on one small episode of conflict between Native Americans and the Puritan settlers.

The Native Americans become individuals, the settlers and townsfolk are vividly portrayed.

The friendships and the ultimate tragedy born of misunderstandings and human foibles (on both sides) unrolls before the readers eyes in an unforgettable manner.

This is gifted storytelling in a graphic novel format that provides insight as well as entertainment.

When the English settlers arrive in America, they bring their mores, their values, their prejudices and their troubles with them.

Only to find that the neighboring natives are already dealing with their prejudices, mores and values of their own.

So back to addressing the European Comic genre, what a better representative could’ve I picked than Milo Manara.

This Italian author has been doing comics for the better part of 40 years, albeit what really gave him an international name and got attention of the comic book industry was his amazing and masterful erotic art.

His renown is such that recently Marvel did something quite daring and brought Milo Manara into their universe, in a one shot book, called X-Women.

Although for the English speaking world  this graphic novel was titled Indian Summer, the original title is Tutto ricominciò con un’estate Indiana and the literal translation would be “Everything began with an Indian Summer”.

This hints at the type of narrative we will be reading here. A recollection, a melancholic recapping of events from long ago.

Manara's art speaks for itself, so no need to go on and on about it. But the stories written by him are usually pointless sex tales. The difference with Indian Summer is that Pratt actually gave him a great story (the struggles of early settlers for survival, and their unpredictable relations with the native indians).

Manara expresses the emotions of his characters beautifully through his pencil.

Uriah Heep : The Magician' s Birthday 1972

Uriah Heep's by-the-books progressive heavy metal made the British band one of the most popular hard rock groups of the early '70s. Formed by vocalist David Byron and guitarist Mick Box in the late '60s, the group went through an astonishing number of members over the next two decades -- nearly 30 different musicians passed through the band over the years. Byron and Box were members of the mid-'60s rock band called the Stalkers; once that band broke up, the duo formed another group called Spice. Spice would eventually turn into Uriah Heep in the late '60s, once Ken Hensley (guitar, keyboards, vocals) and bassist Paul Newton joined the pair. Former Spice drummer Alex Napier was the band's drummer for a brief time; he was quickly replaced by Nigel Olsson.

Very 'Eavy... Very 'Umble
Uriah Heep released their debut album Very 'eavy...Very 'umble (called Uriah Heep in the U.S.) in 1970. After its release, Keith Baker became the group's drummer; he recorded Salisbury, the group's second album, before deciding he couldn't keep up with the band's extensive touring and was replaced by Ian Clarke. Salisbury, featuring a 16-minute title track recorded with a 26-piece orchestra, showcased the band's more progressive tendencies. Later that year, Ian Clarke was replaced by Lee Kerslake and Mark Clarke replaced Newton; Mark Clarke quickly left the band and Gary Thain became the group's bassist. This lineup of Uriah Heep was its most stable and popular; beginning with 1972's Demons and Wizards, they released five albums between 1972 and 1975.

Different World
After 1975, the band's popularity began to slip. Byron left the band in 1977 and was replaced by John Lawton, yet the group's fortunes kept declining right into the early '80s. However, Uriah Heep soldiered on, continuing to release albums into the '90s and 2000s. The album roster included Different World (1994), Sea of Light (1995), Sonic Origami (1998), and Spellbinder (1999).

by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

THE MAGICIAN'S BIRTHDAY

It starts dramatically with "Sunrise," a spooky power ballad that alternates quiet organ-led verses with an emotional chorus and guitar-fuelled instrumental breaks topped off by David Byron's operatic wail. The remainder of the album divides its time between punchy rockers and spacy balladry before climaxing with another prog-inflected epic. Highlights in the rock arena include "Blind Eye," an acoustic-flavored rocker whose galloping pace is firmly anchored by Gary Thain's melodic bassline, and "Sweet Lorraine," a stomping good-time rocker that adds extra texture to its guitar-driven sound with some spacy synthesizer lines.

As for the quieter moments, "Rain" is a lovely piano ballad that makes surprising and impressive use of a xylophone in its sound and "Echoes in the Dark" is an eerie mid-tempo song that alternates stark piano-led verses with an emotional chorus cemented by Mick Box's searing guitar leads. There is also another multi-part epic in the title track, a prog-ish piece with fantasy themes.

It lacks a strong structure (it feels more like three songs grafted together than a true multi-part composition) and succumbs to a bit of aimless jamming in the middle, but it is redeemed by strong hooks in the opening and a spirited performance from the band on its space rock finale.

The Magician's Birthday     Lyrics

Hensley/Box/Kerslake

In the magic garden
Some were singing some were dancing
While the midnight moon shone brightly overhead
The stars so gaily glistened
And the sphinx in silence listened
To the magician's tale of lives that he had led

Let the bells of freedom ring
Songs of love to friday's king
Let's all go to the magician's birthday
It's in the forest but not so far away
Much to do and so much to say
While we listened to the orchid orchestra play

Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday dear magician
Happy birthday to you

Then at the dead of midnight
As we watched the dancing fire light
The air grew cold and seemed to dull the flame
The fire died the music faded
Filled with fear of death we waited
For now we knew some evil was to blame...

-I challenge you I challenge you all
For all you own and all you know
And by all the powers of darkness
I will steal what is mine

Surrender now or face my spite
I grant you it may be Friday night
But did you know this day
Also numbers thirteen

First I give you fire
-I turn your fire into a sleepy stream
-Yes but now I give you nightmares
-But from your horror I'll create a dream
-You cannot fight me for I have the sword of hate
-But one thing you can't see: my answer is simply
an impenetrable fortress of love - love

The fear went as quickly as it came
The air was clear the fire burned again
The flames leapt the organ played
The swan sang to greet the day
And then we knew that
Love will find love will find love ...

The Strawberry Statement : O.S.T 1970

$

The Strawberry Statement is a 1970 cult film about the counterculture and student revolts of the 1960s, loosely based on the non-fiction book by James Simon Kunen about the Columbia University protests of 1968.

The film does not take place in New York City, at Columbia University, but in Stockton, California, at a fictional university – which is based on San Francisco State College (later San Francisco State University). The original book's author, James Simon Kunen, has a cameo appearance in the film. Thunderclap
Newman's "Something in the Air" and numerous other rock songs are used on the soundtrack.
The song "The Circle Game" was written by Joni Mitchell, and was sung popularized by Buffy Saint-Marie.

The double-LP soundtrack to the film featuring Bruce Davison, Kim Darby, and James Coco is a coup for record executive Mike Curb, who composes the ultra-tacky liner notes, which contain the keyword "relevance." It's a compilation of songs by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Neil Young, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Buffy Saint-Marie, and Thunderclap Newman, along with instrumentals by Ian Freebairn-Smith, a minor public-domain track by the Red Mountain Jug Band, and Karl Bohm & the Berlin Philharmonic to boot. Some copies of the album contain Graham Nash's "Our House" from Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young; on other copies the track was missing.
( My copy contains The track : " Our House " )

Each of the album's four sides contains a different theme to Strawberry Statement with different titles; these are the instrumental tracks from Ian Freebairn-Smith. The music in between is incidental; the meat and potatoes here are the Neil Young and Crosby, Stills & Nash titles, along with Buffy Saint-Marie's great rendition of the Joni Mitchell classic "The Circle Game" and Pete Townshend's ( The WHO )production of the exquisitely brilliant and timeless "Something in the Air" by Thunderclap Newman.

It all fits perfectly in an anti-war protest film based on the book by James Kunen and, along with companion albums to the film Easy Rider and other trendy flicks, brought the rock & roll music soundtrack to a level beyond the cheesy Psych Out and Wild in the Streets collections of the '60s.

You've heard most of this music before, but MGM and Curb found some luck by combining these powerful forces under one roof. (all music)

The Story

Simon is a student at a college in San Francisco. He is content to be on the rowing team and remain as just a casual observer to the on-campus unrest, demonstrations and protests. However, curiosity gets the best of him and he begins exploring the inner sanctum of the students who have invaded the dean's office. He soon
meets Linda and becomes a loyal member of the student revolution to meet girls. However, when he truly discovers the corruption and the madness that his comrades are protesting, his mindset also joins the movement. He becomes a revolutionary leader and prepares his comrades for a very violent climactic showdown with "the pigs" at a sit-in.

Black Uhuru : Red

The most successful of the second-generation reggae bands, Black Uhuru maintained their high quality despite numerous personnel changes in their 40-plus-year history. The first reggae band to win a Grammy award, for their 1983 album Anthem, Black Uhuru was, according to Reggae: The Rough Guide, "The most dynamic and progressive reggae act of the 1970s and early '80s."

The group formed in the Waterhouse district of Kingston in 1972, initially called simply "Uhuru" (the Swahili word for freedom), with a line-up of Garth Dennis, Don Carlos, and Derrick "Duckie" Simpson. Their first release was a cover version of Curtis Mayfield's "Romancing to the Folk Song", which was followed by "Time is on Our Side"; Neither song was a success and they split up, with Carlos pursuing a solo career, as did Dennis, before joining The Wailing Souls.[2] Simpson also briefly worked with the Wailing Souls, before

With the addition of harmony singer Sandra "Puma" Jones, an Afro-American woman who held a master's degree from Columbia University and was a former member of the female group Mama Africa in 1981, Black Uhuru entered their most commercially successful period. In addition to recording a memorable studio album, Red, and an exciting live album, Tear It Up, the group reached its peak with the release of Anthem in 1983.

Red is an 1981 album by the Jamaican reggae band Black Uhuru. The line-up of the band changed many
forming a new version of Uhuru with Errol Nelson (of The Jayes) and Michael Rose, the group now taking the name Black Sounds Uhuru. Their Prince Jammy-produced debut album, Love Crisis, was released in 1977.
They had their most successful period in the 1980s, with their album Anthem winning the first ever Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album in 1985.
times during its 16 years and this is the second release for the lineup of Michael Rose, Sandra "Puma" Jones and Derek "Duckie" Simpson. Sly & Robbie were again in the production seat after having previously working with the band on the 1980 album Sinsemilla.

( The sophomore release from the third and most successful incarnation of Black Uhuru (singers Don Carlos, Erroll "Jay" Wilson, and Rudolph "Garth" Dennis had come before), Red spotlights the singing talents of then rising star Michael Rose, American-born Sandra "Puma" Jones, and original member Derrick "Duckie" Simpson. Backed by the tight and dancehall-era defining Sly & Robbie band, the trio reels off eight high-quality reggae cuts here, including classics like "Youth of Eglington" and "Sponji Reggae." Filled with Rose's astute lyrics, the album provides an engaging
blend of steppers rhythms and social commentary. Sly & Robbie's ingenious mix of sophisticated roots reggae and a variety of modern touches (synthesizers, electronic drums) not only brought Black Uhuru widespread fame but, along with Henry "Junjo" Lawes and Prince Jammy's contemporary productions, also helped define the slicked-up last stand of roots rhythms in the first half of the '80s, while foreshadowing reggae's coming digital age. A very enjoyable listen, recommended along with other fine offerings by the band like Chill Out and the Grammy-winning Anthem.    Review by Stephen Cook )

Lush : Sear 1989

Lush were an English alternative rock band, formed in 1987 and disbanded in 1998. They were one of the first bands to attract the "shoegazing" label. Later, their sound progressed toward Britpop

The band formed in 1987, in London, initially named The Baby Machines, with a line-up of Meriel Barham (vocals), Emma Anderson (guitar, vocals), Miki Berenyi (guitar, vocals), Steve Rippon (bass), and Chris Acland (drums).

Anderson and Berenyi had been schoolfriends, having known each other since the early 1980s. They published the Alphabet Soup fanzine together  and in 1986 Anderson joined The Rover Girls as bassist and Berenyi joined The Bugs also as bass player. Neither band lasted long and in 1987 they joined Barham and Acland in The Baby Machines. Rippon joined shortly thereafter, and the band members decided on a change of name to Lush, making their live debut at the Camden Falcon on 6 March 1988. Barham left the band and later joined Pale Saints. Berenyi then took on lead vocal duties.

Emma Anderson said of the band's beginnings: "We were kind of punk rock in one way. We did think 'Well, if they can do it, why the fuck can't we?' Basically, our idea was to have extremely loud guitars with much weaker vocals. And, really, the vocals were weaker due to nervousness – we'd always be going

'Turn them down! Turn them down!' Miki Berenyi said, "We started by writing crappy riot grrl anthems... which was probably charming in a juvenile way. But there was a very rapid shift from the minute we started to write for records. The music, the lyrics became much more thoughtful and expressive, more important, really. I remember that change beginning when Emma wrote "Thoughtforms," it certainly made me think I needed to get my act together."

In October 1996, tragedy struck the band when drummer Chris Acland committed suicide by hanging himself at his parents' house. After a long period of grieving, the band continued for a time but officially announced that they had split up on 23 February 1998.

Suicidal Tendencies : The Art Of Rebellion 1992

Suicidal Tendencies is an American crossover thrash and hardcore punk band.

Formed in Venice, CA, during the early '80s, the group's leader from the beginning was outspoken vocalist Mike Muir. The outfit specialized in vicious hardcore early on building a huge following among skateboarders, lending a major hand in the creation of skatepunk before turning their focus eventually to thrash metal.

The Art of Rebellion is the sixth studio album by American crossover thrash band Suicidal Tendencies. It was released in 1992 on the Sony Music label.
It is widely considered to be Suicidal's "experimental" album. Mike Clark himself acknowledged this, but also mentioned that the album was not planned that way, and was just a reflection of the band's musical growth.

( On the group's earliest albums, vocalist Mike Muir specialized in intense, angst-ridden rants, harrowing but one-dimensional. He has since developed into a rock-solid vocalist, his voice a powerful and fluid instrument. Muir still delivers emotionally ferocious spoken-word segments on "Nobody Hears" and "I Wasn't Meant to Hear This," but the trademark is woven into good songs rather than being an end onto itself. A clenched fist in a velvet glove -- or is it an open hand in chain mail? -- whichever, The Art of Rebellion packs a punch that should win over new devotees while maintaining the group's hardcore following.
